“Never tell lies.” Those three words are perched atop the opening paragraph of “American Shield,” the 2023 autobiography of former U.S. Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell. Since the protests and riot at the U.S. Capitol, Gonell has become one of the most prominent faces of Jan. 6, 2021. He gave emotional testimony on national television before the now-defunct Jan. 6 Select Committee and appeared as a frequent prosecution witness in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. News photos and video of him dabbing tears from his eyes have been seen in mainstream media around the world.
