😨   Doomsday Clock set to 85 seconds to midnight — closest ever

science

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to midnight — four seconds closer than last year and the closest setting in the clock’s history — citing intensified nuclear risks, accelerating climate impacts and rapid, underregulated AI deployment as primary drivers [3][7][2]. The Bulletin highlighted a breakdown in international cooperation and rising nationalism among major powers (including tensions tied to Russia, China, the U.S., and regional conflicts such as Russia‑Ukraine and India‑Pakistan) as amplifiers of risk [6][3]. The organization warned that the imminent expiration of the U.S.–Russia strategic arms framework and the “hasty rollout” of powerful AI systems increase the chance of catastrophic outcomes [4][7].
