😨   Bulletin sets Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds, citing nuclear, climate, AI risks

politics

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to midnight — the closest setting in its history — citing an aggregate of nuclear brinkmanship, accelerating climate change, and rapidly deployed, poorly governed artificial intelligence as principal drivers [3][7][2]. The group highlighted rising aggression and nationalism among nuclear-armed states and warned the imminent expiry of the last bilateral U.S.–Russia arms-limit framework (New START) increases the likelihood of an unconstrained arms race [4][6][3]. The Bulletin framed these as interconnected risks that erode international cooperation and magnify one another, while urging urgent, collective action to reverse the trend [3][1].
