Oscars 2021: The Surprises, the Snubs and the Front-Runners

art and culture

Mank, David Fincher’s black-and-white film about the making of Citizen Kane, led the Oscar nominations announced Monday morning, with 10 in all, while Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) made Oscar history as the first Asian woman to be nominated for best director. And for the first time ever, two women were nominated for best director in the same year, with Emerald Fennell getting a nod for Promising Young Woman. Both Zhao and Fennell were actually double nominees, as Zhou also received a best adapted screenplay nomination for her script for Nomadland, and Fennel was nominated for best original screenplay for Promising Young Woman. And both their films’ stars, the two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand and previous nominee Carey Mulligan, were nominated for best actress, McDormand for Nomadland and Mulligan for Promising Young Woman. Those two films will compete against six others in the best picture race: The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Sound of Metal and The Trial of the Chicago 7, with Nomadland perhaps the early favorite based on its earlier wins this awards season. Conspicuously missing from that list were three films that have done well so far this awards season and were heavily favored to get an Oscar nomination: Spike Lee’s Da Five Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and One Night in Miami, directed by Oscar-winner Regina King, whom many Oscar prognosticators had thought might get an Oscar nomination for her directorial debut.
