Are You Ready to Be Surveilled Like a Sex Worker?
Friday’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is one of the most devastating rulings to come out of Washington. It’s also the next step in a larger campaign to expand state surveillance and erode the right to privacy—a campaign that sex workers have been fighting for decades.

WHO: Monkeypox outbreak not yet a global public health emergency
A public health emergency of international concern, or PHEIC, grants the WHO director-general certain powers, such as the ability to recommend how countries should respond. While it’s a legal lever the agency can use, it’s also a tool that can grab public attention and steer it to try to address burgeoning health threats. Such a declaration could further rally donors and member countries to increase funding.

“We’re at a Crisis Point”: NY Attorney General Hearing Spotlights Child Mental Health Care Failures
by Abigail Kramer and Gabriel Poblete, THE CITY This article was produced for ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network in partnership with THE CITY. Sign up for Dispatches to get stories like this one as soon as they are published. By slashing inpatient psychiatric care, New York has left people with too few places to turn for treatment of serious mental health conditions, state Attorney General Letitia James said at a hearing held by her office Wednesday. James called the hearing following reports by THE CITY and ProPublica on New York state’s failure to provide mental health care to children and adolescents. Our investigation found that state officials have closed nearly one-third of the beds for children in state-run psychiatric hospitals since 2014, under a “Transformation Plan” rolled out by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. During the same period, nonprofit groups shut down more than half of the beds in New York’s residential treatment facilities for kids, in large part because state payments were too low to keep the programs running. “We’re at a crisis point, and we certainly need action,” James said at the hearing. “Emergency departments are overwhelme...

US Capitol attack: how the public reaction to the January 6 hearings reflects deep divisions in the US
After nearly a year of investigating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6 2021, the Democrat-led House Select committee is holding a series of public hearings to present its findings to the US public. These findings include that the former US president, Donald Trump, and his allies engaged in illegal efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The committee, which has a Republican co-chair, Liz Cheney, also found they knowingly spread lies regarding the integrity of the electoral system, which culminated in the attack on the heart of American democracy. According to one report in the New York Times, at least 20 million people watched the first primetime hearing. It was carried live by all major public and private news outlets in the US, with the notable exception of Fox News. It bears repeating that, by all measures, the 2020 general election was one of the most secure elections in American history, with no evidence of widespread voter fraud. These facts have been confirmed over and over again by federal agencies and courts – most recently by the Trump administration’s attorney general, Bill Barr, via video testimony presented at the hearings. Barr recounted tel...

Primetime Hearing Focuses on the Plan Behind January 6
Thursday’s hearing of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol covered mounds of information, but one sentence from Rep. Capitol Police Chief Debunks J6 Committee Conspiracy Theory
Capitol Police Chief Debunks J6 Committee Conspiracy Theory As the Democrat-run January 6th Committee goes to great lengths to present their unifying theory of insurrection surrounding that fateful day in 2001, Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger has debunked a Democrat allegation that a GOP lawmaker, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), ran a reconnaissance mission inside the Capitol one day before the riot. "There is no evidence that Representative Loudermilk entered the U.S. Capitol with this group on January 5, 2021," Manger wrote in a Monday letter to Rep. Rodbey Davis (R-IL), ranking Republican on the House Administration Committee, after reviewing security footage of Loudermilk giving people a tour of congressional office buildings. "We train our officers on being alert for people conducting surveillance or reconnaissance, and we do not consider any of the activities we observed as suspicious," the letter continues (via Just the News). J6 Committee Democrat Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and RINO Liz Cheney (R-WY) made allegations against Loudermilk in a letter to the media last month, demanding to know why Loudermilk explain why he was giving a tour of the Capitol the day before the ri...
