When I started my first company, UpStream Software, data integration was at the same phase that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are at right now. It was a black box IT thing that just happened. As I remember it, internal teams or consultants would build something as a one-off project for a specific purpose, but businesses didn’t have much confidence in its use case beyond that. And why would they? There was no transparency, it was difficult to understand and the commercial software presence was minimal, if not nonexistent.
