The U.S. is undergoing rapid changes in technology, values, culture, and demographics, all of which are causing a transformation in transportation. The historic transportation infrastructure challenges—transportation funding shortfalls and a backlog of needs for aging infrastructure—are compounded with new challenges. Significant resources and attention are being directed to ensuring equity in access and impacts, intentions to reduce carbon emissions, increasing resilience to weather events, and ramping up attention to the perennial problem of unacceptable levels of transportation safety.
