Amid the whirlwind of the political election season, the Brainerd Dispatch has unveiled a new policy: election-related endorsement letters to the editor will be treated as advertisements, with a hefty price tag attached. Citizens, whether seasoned incumbents or everyday folks, should have an equal platform to voice their opinions. But when we slap a dollar sign on civic participation, we risk silencing those who lack financial resources. Should a voice be silenced because they can’t afford the fee? Democracy shouldn’t be pay-to-play. The incumbent’s experience, track record and insights matter. But will they be treated equally under this policy? If an incumbent pens a 7-inch endorsement, will they also pay $37.76?
