TMO Forecast

BearishBullish

80% Confidence

Bullish Case: Known: TMO ~$535 and recent action is flat. The TMO term structure is backwardated (high near-term IV) but long-dated IV sits closer to the mid-30s, consistent with hedging rather than a durable repricing lower. On the TMO IV surface, ATM (~525–545) is relatively cooler than deep downside strikes. The TMO return surface’s highest-likelihood band centers near ~0% to +8%. My earlier sideways call largely played out, so the bullish case leans modestly upward (~+3%…+8%).

Bearish Case: Inferred from the TMO IV surface: downside strikes (puts) price a fatter left tail than upside, and backwardation keeps near-term uncertainty elevated. My prior -8%…-12% drawdown call (25%) wasn’t realized yet (flat tape), so the bearish base rate compresses, but tail risk remains. The bearish case strengthens if SPY IV keeps trending higher with time (SPY surface) and if ATM TMO IV fails to cool after the next update (late-July/early-Aug window).

Potential Outcomes:
  1. 42%: -3…+5% if TMO ATM IV stays ~mid-30s while price remains range-bound (falsify: ATM IV rises with spot).
  2. 27%:+5…+10% if next guidance improves and call skew/IV cool (late Jul/Aug).
  3. 18%:-6…-10% if SPY IV rises and downside put IV remains richer than term avg.
  4. 8%:±12–15% if headline drives near-term IV spike.
  5. 5%:≤-12% if macro credit shock lifts SPY IV to high-20s and TMO puts surge.
