The New American Media Bias

The New American Media Bias may be less a single editorial conspiracy than a structural asymmetry. A 2026 Cambridge study of 420k US Twitter users in 2022 found conservatives were a minority, overexposed to liberal-leaning cross-cutting content; liberals were underexposed to conservative media, so liberal outlets had broader audiences while conservative media circulated in tighter networks   . Known: this asymmetry existed pre-Musk   . Inferred: “mainstream” vs. “niche” labels partly reflect network position, not only content bias   . Uncertain: causality and whether post-2022 platform changes altered this. Bias disputes also get politicized: a Florida homework assignment mixed media bias with “stolen” election claims   ; RT, a state-affiliated outlet, framed Trump’s VOA funding cuts as pushback against perceived bias   ; Fox tied abortion polling to media framing   . These examples suggest contested narratives, not settled consensus.
